A former candidate for the Provincial Assembly was shot dead in broad daylight in Lahore's Ghalib Market on Wednesday after unidentified gunmen opened fire on him, according to 24NewsHD TV.
Police identified the victim as Chaudhry Abdullah Tahir, a resident of Okara who had travelled to Lahore for medical treatment in the Gulberg area. He had previously contested the provincial election from constituency PP-188 Okara.
According to police, two armed men entered a clinic in Gulberg where Abdullah Tahir was present and opened fire on him before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. Abdullah Tahir sustained critical gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
During the shooting, Dr Riaz Khan was also struck by a bullet and injured. He was immediately shifted to Services Hospital for treatment, where hospital officials said his condition is now out of danger.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Faisal Kamran directed the Superintendent of Police for Model Town Division to utilise all available resources to trace and arrest the attackers without delay. Police are examining footage from Safe City surveillance cameras and using other technical means to identify and locate the suspects.
Faisal Kamran said a forensic team had collected evidence from the crime scene and expressed confidence that the suspects would be arrested soon and brought before the courts.
