Pneumonia is an infectious disease that causes hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide, especially among children and the elderly.

As a respiratory disease, it largely affects the lungs, caused by various pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.

It damages the functions of the lungs by causing inflammation and accumulation of mucus and fluid in the small air sacs called alveoli, resulting in difficulty breathing.

Pneumonia is an airborne disease and transmissible through coughing or sneezing, and also through the blood, particularly during and immediately following childbirth.

Important risk factors include smoking, the use of biofuels such as wood or dung for cooking and heating, high room density, insufficient ventilation, outdoor air pollution, and lack of access to healthcare.
