Nepra approves cut in electricity tariff

Also okays Rs1.7 per unit hike in K-Electric rate

March 30, 2023 03:39 PM

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) Thursday conducted a hearing on the monthly fuel cost adjustment for February and approved to slash the electricity prices by 0.0006 paisa per unit, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

According to the official sources, the Nepra will issue the details of the decision later. The decision will not be applicable to the lifeline and K-electric customers.

“In February, less electricity was generated from water and imported coal. Due to the closure of the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, electricity generation through hydropower has decreased,” the Nepra officials said.

The authority expressed its displeasure over not fully including the electricity generated from Thar Coal in the national grid.

The Nepra authorities also said that an additional burden of over Rs6.5 billion had to be borne due to the violation of merit order in February 2023.

They added that due to the transmission line issues, an additional burden of over Rs5.6 billion had to be borne.

“Does the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has any future planning? We have been told that the Neelum-Jhelum Power Plant will start generating electricity in July,” the Nepra chairman said during the hearing.
