Floods, landslides and lightning kill 28 in Afghanistan

At least 28 people have been killed and 49 injured in Afghanistan after days of heavy rain triggered flash floods, landslides, and lightning strikes across several provinces, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to Afghan authorities, torrential rainfall that began on Thursday has caused widespread destruction in multiple parts of the country, with officials warning that the death toll could rise as rescue and damage assessment efforts continue.

Afghan officials said the fatalities were caused by a combination of flooding, landslides, and lightning incidents linked to the severe weather, which has also destroyed more than 100 homes.

The latest disaster adds to a growing toll from extreme weather in Afghanistan, where vulnerable infrastructure and mountainous terrain frequently amplify the impact of seasonal rains and snow.

In January, more than 60 people were killed in the country due to heavy rainfall and snowfall, underscoring the recurring humanitarian risks posed by harsh weather conditions.

Afghanistan has repeatedly faced deadly flooding in recent years, with aid agencies warning that climate-related shocks, poor drainage systems, and fragile housing leave many communities highly exposed to natural disasters.
