Six armed robbers raided three jewellery shops and looted 1.5 kilograms of gold and 14 kilograms of silver worth millions of rupees in broad daylight in Karachi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.

The incident took place in RBS Shopping Mall near Saima Shopping Center on University Road in the megacity.

The robbers also opened fire while escaping, triggering panic in the surrounding area, police said.

The incident took place between 1.45 pm and 2 pm on Sunday, according to the affected jewellers. A call was also made to police helpline 15 during the robbery, but the suspects had fled by the time police arrived.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Zubair Nazir said that the three targeted shops were RBS Jewellers, Ayesha Jewellers and Khadija Jewellers.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the robbery and called the crime scene unit to collect evidence.

The unit recovered fingerprints and other clues from the site, while investigators are obtaining CCTV footage to identify and track down the suspects.

SSP Sheikh said none of the three jewellery shops had a watchman or a security guard posted outside.
