In a latest development, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has formed an 11-member team for taking action on the sugar inquiry commission report, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Friday.

The move came as the federal cabinet had approved the recommendation to take action on the findings contained in the report its June 30 meeting.

According to details, the investigation team headed by FIA Islamabad Zone Director Dr Moeen Masood also has representatives from the Customs, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

Sources say the team will probe into the matter of bogus import of sugar to Afghanistan as well as the alleged money laundering related to the scandal.

Earlier this month, the federal cabinet had also approved formation of a committee to devise a long-term strategy to reform the sugar sector in the light of recommendations of the inquiry commission.

This approval was a result of the sugar inquiry commission report which had noted that there was a complete lack of basic regulation. It called for improvement in the regulatory system, saying the regulatory institutions should step up their regulations.

In a related development, the federal government last week directed relevant authorities to launch a massive crackdown against sugar barons and submit their reports in next 90 days.
