Strict enforcement of code of conduct ensured for GB elections, says CEC Raja Shahbaz Khan

Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan Raja Shahbaz Khan has said that strict implementation of the electoral code of conduct is being ensured during the general elections, warning that no violation will be tolerated under any circumstances.

Addressing a press conference in Gilgit, he said the Election Commission’s foremost priority is to conduct free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections so that voters can exercise their right in a secure environment. Provincial Election Commissioner Abid Raza was also present on the occasion.

Raja Shahbaz Khan stated that an effective monitoring system has already been put in place, and monitoring officers have been granted full authority to take immediate action against violations of the code of conduct. He warned that indiscriminate legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to sabotage the electoral process, disturb law and order, or spread provocation.

He further said that some elements were trying to influence the election environment and spread unrest through social media and other platforms, which he termed a clear violation of both the Election Code of Conduct and the Penal Code of Pakistan. He added that such individuals would face legal action without exception.

The Chief Election Commissioner noted that in recent days, notices had been issued to some political figures and federal ministers for alleged violations of the electoral code. He emphasized that no candidate or party would be given preferential treatment and that the law would be applied equally to all.

Responding to a question, Raja Shahbaz Khan said that the Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan had obtained a valid NOC for his visit to the region, and all activities were being conducted in accordance with existing laws and regulations. He added that all individuals arriving from the federation or other provinces are required to complete legal formalities and obtain prior permission.

He made it clear that during the election campaign, no candidate would be allowed to participate in processions or activities that could disturb public order. He warned that any violation of the code of conduct could result in strict legal action, including disqualification.

Reaffirming the Commission’s stance, he said all available resources are being utilized to ensure transparent and peaceful elections in Gilgit-Baltistan, and no attempt to undermine the credibility of the electoral process will be allowed to succeed.
