Incessant rain disrupts life in Lahore, Karachi

Lahorites and Karachiites experienced record rain on Wednesday that also brought urban flooding in low-lying areas of the cities disrupting routine life, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Over 100 feeders of LESCO have been tripped as the rain lashed Lahore. The downpour has been continued uninterrupted in various parts of the city. Many areas including Johar Town were without electricity.

Lahore Deputy Commissioner Umar Sher Chatha has directed civic authorities to remain on alert to counter urban flooding. Meanwhile, Wasa and Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) teams were also clearing the choke points of the city.

Also, traffic wardens were clearing the traffic to ensure smooth flow in different parts of the city.

NDMA spokesperson also said that NDMA has been in touch with provincial authorities in the wake of rains and snowfall in the country. 

More rain expected in Karachi

In Karachi, a person was electrocuted in Korangi Bilal Colony amid the ongoing rains in the port city while K-Electric system was also collapsed. 

The highest rainfall was recorded in Surjani Town at 36.9mm, Gulshan-e-Shadeed at 32.0mm, Quaidabad at 28mm, Nazimabad at 23mm, North Karachi at 22mm, University Road at 22mm, PAF Faisal Base at 22mm and Jinnah terminal at 20mm.

The K-Electric system has been literally shut down leaving Karachiites on their own. Many areas in Karachi are without electricity.

Wednesday was the third business day of the week but business activity is grim in markets as rainwater inundated the market surroundings in Eid gah, old city area and Lohar market. 

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Karachi Wednesday and Thursday under the influence of a westerly weather system. The downpour, which began in several areas of the city on Tuesday evening, intensified later at night. The people of Karachi woke up to heavy showers Wednesday morning too.

Immediately after the rain, a power outage was reported in several areas such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulberg, Malir, Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi and Saddar.

According to the Met Office, the weather is expected to remain cloudy in most areas of Sindh. it has warned of rain and wind thunderstorms in Dadu, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Mirpur Khas, Khairpur, and Mohenjo-Daro.

Heavy rain is also likely in upper Punjab such as Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lahore, Potohar, and snowfall in Murree and Galiyat.

The Civil Aviation Authority has canceled ten national and international flight operations from Karachi today due to heavy rainfall.

It has directed officials to address the potential emergency. “Small planes should be parked in a safe place. Birds may come when insects accumulate during possible rains, so keep fumigation equipment ready and bird shooters on the runway,” the authority added.

Also, Balochistan’s coastal belt on Tuesday received heavy rains which left several areas inundated in Kech, Gwadar, Turbat, Buleda, Tump, and Bilnagor.

Homes were damaged in Dasht Bilingor, Dalesar, Balkross, and Kashap. Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has called a meeting to monitor the situation.

Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) along with the local administration has begun the rescue work. Heavy machinery was clearing roads and delivering relief supplies to the affectees, according to officials.

A large number of oil carrying vehicles have been stranded in Balochistan during heavy rainfall in the area on Wednesday.

Over 1000 oil carrying vehicles have been stranded in Abdoi, near the Pakistan Iran border during rainfall.

People in these vehicles facing hardships due to freezing cold weather, according to a report. In a video message, people stranded with their vehicles in the area, have pleaded to the Chief Minister of Balochistan and district authorities to extend helping hand to them.

Balochistan’s coastal belt as well as Turbat and other areas have received heavy rainfall.

Rainwater entered in houses in southern part of the port city of Gwadar. Coastal towns of Jiwani, Pasni and Ormara also received heavy rainfall.

Rainwater entered in populated areas in Turbat disrupting land link of the region with other parts.

Provincial fisheries department had advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during the rough weather.
