The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has issued a notification to hike the power tariff, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

The authority approved an additional surcharge of Rs 3.39 per unit. The consumers are already paying 43 paise per unit surcharge.

The additional surcharge will be applicable for 2023-24 and the K-electric customers will also be burdened.

Reportedly, the government surrendered to another IMF demand by imposing an additional surcharge.

The step has been taken to generate Rs335b more in revenue over the next fiscal year to finance the power sector’s debt and liabilities.

Consumers of K-Electric will face double jeopardy, as the Karachi utility got the go-ahead to increase the tariff by Rs1.56 per unit in the current month and then another Rs6.11 per unit in April and May.
