The federal cabinet on Saturday approved the proposal to make the tax directory of parliamentarians public.

According to sources, people will be now able to access all tax information of a parliamentarian via the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). A complete tax directory of all taxpayers of the country would also be made public. A summary in this regard was circulated to the cabinet members for approval. The directory of the tax year 2018 is being published after a delay of two years.

Now the FBR will also make public figures of direct tax. This is the first time the FBR is going to make public figures of tax collected from various sectors and regions. Sources say Rs449 billion tax was collected from Sindh, Rs269 billion from Punjab, Rs29 billion from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Rs13 billion from Balochistan.

The FBR collected Rs115 billion tax from Islamabad, Rs76 billion from the Association of Persons, Rs497 billion from companies, Rs185 billion from salaried persons and Rs129 billion from non-salaried people.

According to the sources, the decision to make the tax directory public has been taken with the aim to educate and encourage people and ensure transparency in tax collection.
