A look at the Tragedy King’s classic films

As the Bollywood icon, Dilip Kumar, departed for his heavenly abode, here is a look at some of his classic films that are cherished by his fans to date. 

Daag (1952)

Produced and directed by Amiya Chakravarty, Dilip Kumar won the first-ever award in the Best Actor category for his performance in this film. Apart from Dilip Kumar, Nimmi and Lalita Pawar also starred in lead roles.

Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

An Indian epic historical drama in which Dilip Kumar played the role of Prince Salim, Mughal-e-Azam, also starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala, Durga Khote, is one of the most talked-about movies of the Hindi film industry to date. Dilip Kumar brought a new dimension to the love scenes he enacted with Madhubala who played Anarkali.

Naya Daur (1957)

Directed and produced by B. R. Chopra, 'Naya Daur' was written by Akhtar Mirza, and starred Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala, with Ajit Khan and Jeevan in supporting roles. The film got both commercial and critical success.

Madhumati (1958)

Directed and produced by Bimal Roy, and written by Ritwik Ghatak and Rajinder Singh Bedi, "Madhumati' starred Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala. It was one of the earliest films to deal with reincarnation and had a gothic noir feel to it.

Ganga Jamuna (1961)

Written and produced by Dilip Kumar, and directed by Nitin Bose, with dialogues written by Wajahat Mirza, the film's story set around an innocent man who is forced to become a dacoit. Dilip Kumar did perhaps one of his best roles in the film.

Ram Aur Shyam (1967)

Directed by Tapi Chanakya, the film starred Dilip Kumar in a double role as twins separated at birth, alongside Waheeda Rehman, Mumtaz, Nirupa Roy and Pran. After a bad spell at the box office, Dilip Kumar came back with a bang with 'Ram Aur Shyam'.

Devdas (1955)

Based on the Saratchandra Chattopadhyay novel by the same name, the story is about a tragic lover played by Dilip Kumar. This is considered one of his best performances to date. Devdas was also ranked number 2 film on the University of Iowa's List of Top 10 Bollywood Films by Corey K. Creekmur. It was directed by Bimal Roy.

Shakti (1982)

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, written by the Salim–Javed duo, and produced by Mushir-Riaz, it was notable for being the first and only film to feature veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan together on screen. The film is regarded as one of the greatest films in the history of cinema.

Mashaal (1984)

Produced and directed by Yash Chopra, it starred Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Anil Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri. Vinod Kumar (Dilip Kumar) played a respected, law-abiding citizen who turns to crime for exacting revenge.

Karma (1986)

The film reunited Subhash Ghai and Dilip Kumar after the success of their last film together Vidhaata (1982). It was the first time Dilip Kumar was paired with Nutan.
