Opposition under fire for downplaying Covid threat

Prime Minister Imran Khan Tuesday chaired a meeting of the federal cabinet that took up 17-point agenda.

The cabinet showed serious concerns over opposition’s activities at a time with the deadly Covid-19 was on the prowl. The meeting also discussed the issue of severing diplomatic relations with France and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi assigned the task of consulting with the Muslim states over such serious issues.

Lashing out at the opposition parties for staging demonstrations at a time when corona causalities reached an alarming level, the prime minister said: “The opposition has been playing with the lives of people in a bid to escape the ongoing accountability.”

He stressed the need for telling the people that such shows have been causing the spread of the deadly Covid-19, saying that the opposition parties were showing irresponsibility. The PM also took notice of oxygen shortage in a Peshawar hospital and issued directives to ensure uninterrupted supply to avert such a situation in future.

Federal Minister for IT Aminul Haq raised the issue of missing persons, the PM directed Interior Minister Ijaz Shah to look into the matter. The MQM complained about being ignored in the meeting of Karachi Transformation Plan and Imran assured them of addressing their concerns.

Qureshi briefed the cabinet about the recent OIC meeting. He said all the OIC members condemned the Indian atrocities in illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The federal cabinet approved the restructuring of the board of directors of six power distribution companies with the aim to improve their efficiency. These include distribution companies of Faisalabad, Lahore, Islamabad, Hyderabad, Peshawar and Quetta.

Special Assistant on National Health Services Faisal Sultan briefed the cabinet about the latest Covid-19 situation. The meeting was apprised that the second wave of the pandemic is proving to be more fatal with 89 deaths a day. The cabinet was informed that the virus intensity has increased in all the cities of the country.
