Amid the alarming spread of coronavirus in Lahore and other parts of Punjab, the Lahore Gymkhana – the social hub of the city’s gentry – was closed till June 20, as the management said no member would be allowed to enter the premises, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

The decision on a day when Iftikhar Sahoo – principal secretary to Chief Minister Usman Buzdar – became the latest high-profile infected person, showing that the virus is not sparing the decision-makers too.

Sahoo went into quarantine soon after being diagnosed with the coronavirus as other staff members at the Chief Minister Secretariat were also tested to trace the infections.

The provincial health minister, Yasmin Rashid, on Tuesday repeated the much-repeated statement by the government members that they knew that the virus would spread at an alarming rate when they had decided to relax the lockdown.

Earlier, the latest official figures revealed that Monday [the last 24 hours] proved to be the deadliest day for Pakistan since the outbreak of the pandemic as 105 died of the virus, raising the death toll to 2,172 in the country.

Most of these deaths were recorded in Punjab where 58 patients lost their lives after which the overall total for the province climbed to 773. The deadly virus has so far been found in 40,819 people, making it the worst-affected region of the country.

On the other hand, some local judges and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) staff members in Multan have tested positive for the virus during the past 24 hours. Additional District and Sessions Judge Sajjad Khan and two civil judges – Shehzad Basit and Hassan Iqbal – were sent on leave after being diagnosed with the virus.

Meanwhile, the four infected NAB officials are: Additional Director (Staff) Mian Waqar, Deputy Director Adnan Aqeeq and two assistant directors – Babar and Rao Khaliq.
