Govt announces maritime energy city to store fuel under 100-year vision

Pakistan has announced an ambitious plan to establish a maritime energy city as part of a long-term strategy aimed at transforming the country into a regional energy logistics hub, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

According to the report, this announcement was made by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, who chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to identify locations for new deep-sea ports.

Addressing the meeting, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the government envisions positioning Pakistan as a key regional hub for energy logistics, adding that the country has already demonstrated its capacity in transshipment operations despite ongoing regional tensions.

He said the proposed energy city would be equipped with modern facilities for the storage of oil, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas and would offer maximum incentives and facilities to attract global investors.

The minister emphasised that while meeting international energy demands, priority would be given to fulfilling domestic requirements, ensuring a balanced and sustainable approach to energy management.

The minister further stated that smaller energy units would also be established to support major ports, enhancing overall operational efficiency and capacity. He added that the project would be developed in consultation with all stakeholders, including provincial governments.

Highlighting progress on port development, the minister revealed that feasibility reports for three to four new ports along the coastal belt have entered their final stages, marking a significant step forward in expanding Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure.

He said the initiative is part of a broader hundred-year vision under which long-term planning for the maritime sector is being actively pursued.
