Coronavirus infections, positivity ratio down, deaths up in Pakistan

NCOC data shows over 5,000 Covid cases, 32 fatalities during last 24 hours: Global Covid-19 death toll nearing six million

There was a sharp drop in coronavirus infections and positivity ratio in Pakistan whereas the number of deaths went up during the last 24 hours (Monday), showed the statistics released by National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Tuesday morning.

The number of Covid-19 cases after hovering between 7,000 to 8,000 for the last many days went down considerably as Pakistan reported 5,327 infections and 32 deaths during the last 24 hours (Tuesday)

As per the latest NCOC data, after the addition of 32 new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 29,301 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,430,366 after adding the fresh 5,327 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Monday), 55,202 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio dropped to 9.65 percent. The number of patients in critical care was 1,500.

During the last 24 hours (Monday), as many as 3,665 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 1,295,390. As of Tuesday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 105,675.

As many as 543,170 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 480,421 in Punjab, 194,887 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 128,429 in Islamabad, 34,417 in Balochistan, 38,339 in Azad Kashmir and 10,703 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 13,176 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 7,829 in Sindh, 6,002 in KP, 980 in Islamabad, 758 in Azad Kashmir, 368 in Balochistan and 188 in Gilgit Baltistan.

- Canadian PM positive -
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has tested positive for Covid-19 but is not experiencing severe symptoms.

- Libyan vaccine pass -
Libyans will from February 15 need a vaccine pass to enter public places, notably markets, after the number of Covid infections reaches record levels.

- Youth jobs hit -  
Britain's young people were disproportionately hit by unemployment during the Covid-19 pandemic and many have since returned to work in more insecure jobs, the Resolution Foundation think-tank says.

- Over 5.6 million dead -
The coronavirus has killed at least 5,661,274 million people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources on Monday.

The US has recorded the most Covid deaths with 884,260, followed by Brazil with 626,854 and India on 495,050.

Taking into account excess mortality linked to Covid-19, the WHO estimates the overall death toll could be two to three times higher.
