5.3-magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, KP; No immediate reports of damage

Moderate earthquake tremors were felt in Islamabad and several cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa late Wednesday night, causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and workplaces.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake struck at 10:57 pm (PST) on July 1, 2026. The quake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and originated at a depth of 174 kilometers.

The PMD said the epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, at latitude 36.53°N and longitude 70.39°E.

The tremors were felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Mohmand, Takht Bhai and Buner, as well as in Swat, including Matta, Khwaza Khela, Kalam, Gabin Jabba, Chaprial, and adjoining areas.

Residents of Landi Kotal also experienced the tremors, with shaking reported from Torkham Border, Shinwari, Khyber, Bazaar Zakha Khel and Shalman.

The earthquake prompted many people to leave their homes and buildings as a precaution. However, no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property were received.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, while the PMD continues to assess seismic activity in the region.
