IHC issues notice to govt over non-appointment of Indus Water Commissioner

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday issued a notice to the Federation regarding non-appointment of Indus Water Commissioner, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

During proceeding, IHC’s Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir while hearing a judicial activism plea, directed the deputy attorney general to take instructions from the federal government and inform the court on June 9.

During the proceedings, the judge directed Deputy Attorney General Sajid Tanoli to come to the rostrum and instructed him to consult government and inform the court because this is a serious issue.

Advocate Azhar Siddique represented the applicant in the court, saying post of Indus Water Commissioner has been lying vacant since 1 September, 2025. “Under Article 8 of the Indus Water Treaty commissioner’s appointment should be on permanent basis,” he added.

Azhar Siddique maintained this has now become a very serious issue as India is building dams on River Chenab.

The court adjourning the hearing until June 9.
