Ramadan row: Sonya Hussyn slams disrespect and TRP-driven sensationalism
Pakistani actress Sonya Hussyn has spoken out against the rising disrespect in Ramadan transmissions, condemning the use of foul language and offensive remarks against senior artists during the holy month.
In a strongly worded Instagram story, she urged members of the entertainment industry to reflect on their conduct, especially during a time meant for spiritual growth and humility.
Expressing disappointment over recent social media exchanges, Sonya questioned why some artists were behaving “so disgracefully” online, particularly in Ramadan. She emphasised that using inappropriate language against senior figures is deeply troubling, while also noting that seniors, too, should pause and reflect before making public statements.
The actress also addressed the growing debate around hosting Ramadan transmissions, describing it as a rare privilege and a “saadat” (blessing) granted to only a few. She revealed that although she has been offered such opportunities multiple times, she does not consider herself knowledgeable enough to shoulder that responsibility.
Criticizing the industry’s increasing reliance on sensational, TRP-driven content, Sonya warned that while such programming may temporarily boost ratings, it ultimately lowers society’s intellectual and moral standards. She reminded fellow artists that public recognition comes with responsibility, adding that humility is what truly justifies fame.
Her comments come amid heated online discussions following Fazila Qazi’s viral remarks, in which she criticized the commercialization of Ramadan transmissions, asking, “Where is PEMRA? What kind of things are being said in Ramadan transmissions… we cross all limits for ratings!”
Fans have since been divided, with some supporting Fazila’s and Sonya’s call for more respect and sensitivity during the sacred month, while others argue that the critiques are unfair.
