Sanya Malhotra slams social media, questions Bollywood silence
Actor Sanya Malhotra has spoken out about Bollywood’s approach to political matters, expressing concerns over social media and its impact on public discourse.
Sanya questioned whether people genuinely want to listen when celebrities share opinions on important issues. She said, “Everyone has the right to speak. But do people also want to listen? Social media has made things very unserious.
Even if someone has a valid point, people don’t want to receive it. Within days, sometimes hours, people forget. Important issues get stuck in the algorithm.”
She added that sensitivity and empathy online have diminished, saying, “The sad part is that people only speak on social media. Sensitivity has gone down. People are less empathetic, and that’s worrying.”
Sanya shared her desire to explore challenging roles, including negative characters, adding, “As an actor, you have to empathize with every character you play.” She praised directors who pushed her beyond her comfort zone.
Fans can next see her in “Toaster” alongside Rajkummar Rao. She also stars in Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film, “Bandar,” with Bobby Deol, releasing on May 22.
Inspired by real events, Bandar follows the story of a fading star accused of rape, shedding light on systemic injustices, silenced voices in courtrooms, and flaws in the legal system.
The film also features Raj B Shetty, Jitendra Joshi, Sapna Pabbi, Indrajith Sukumaran, Riddhi Sen, and Nagesh Bhosle, and is produced by Nikhil Dwivedi under Saffron Magicworks in collaboration with Zee Studios.
Sanya was last seen in “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari” (2025), a romantic comedy directed by Shashank Khaitan, starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Rohit Saraf, Maniesh Paul, and Akshay Oberoi. She also made a cameo in the Thug Life song “Jinguchaa.”
