Why has Hamza Shehbaz returned to active politics? 

After a prolonged period of political dormancy, Hamza Shehbaz has re-emerged on the political stage, signalling a calculated shift within the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N). His renewed activity—reportedly on the direction of his father, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—comes at a time when the party appears to be recalibrating its internal structure following the rise of Maryam Nawaz as Chief Minister of Punjab.
For months, Hamza remained largely absent from meaningful political engagement. Once a central figure—having served both as Leader of the Opposition and Chief Minister in Punjab—his reduced visibility after losing power was widely interpreted as a strategic sidelining. Even within party circles, his role appeared confined to limited engagements, informal consultations, and occasional condolence visits.
However, recent developments suggest a deliberate comeback. Hamza has begun holding meetings with party officials across Punjab, from divisional leadership to union council-level workers, particularly in Lahore. The structured publicity of these engagements indicates that this is not routine political activity but part of a broader organisational strategy.

Filling a Political Space—or Reclaiming Relevance? 

The central question is whether Hamza’s reactivation is merely aimed at strengthening party organisation or reflects a deeper internal repositioning. Observers note that since Maryam Nawaz assumed the chief minister’s office, she has maintained firm control over Punjab’s administrative and political machinery, backed by the full confidence of party supremo Nawaz Sharif.
This has inevitably narrowed Hamza’s political space. Many analysts argue that Nawaz Sharif has effectively signalled Maryam Nawaz as his political heir, a development that temporarily pushed Hamza onto the back foot. In such a scenario, his renewed activity could be seen as an attempt to remain politically relevant within an evolving power structure.
At the same time, party insiders reject the notion that Hamza had withdrawn from politics altogether. They maintain that his current outreach reflects an expansion—rather than a resumption—of political engagement, particularly focused on addressing grassroots concerns and reconnecting with workers.

Internal Dynamics and Strategic Calculations 

Senior political analyst Salman Ghani views Hamza’s role through a pragmatic lens. According to him, the PML-N is entering a phase where consolidating its organisational strength is critical, especially midway through the government’s term. In this context, bringing Hamza into an active organisational role may serve to reinforce the party’s structure, particularly in anticipation of local government elections in Punjab—an area where Hamza has shown keen interest.
Conversely, Najam Sethi interprets the development as part of an internal balancing act. He suggests that Hamza may be seeking to strengthen his foothold in Punjab, potentially positioning himself for a larger role—such as the provincial presidency of the party—or preparing for future political contingencies, including a possible shift of Maryam Nawaz to federal politics.
However, this view is contested. Critics argue that with Shehbaz Sharif firmly entrenched at the federal level and the current political arrangement stable, speculation about imminent shifts remains premature.

There is also growing chatter within political circles that Hamza Shehbaz could eventually be assigned a significant role at the federal level. While no concrete developments have emerged, such discussions underscore the fluidity within PML-N’s internal hierarchy.
What is clear, however, is that Hamza’s return is neither accidental nor symbolic. It reflects a carefully calibrated move within a party navigating leadership transition, governance challenges, and future electoral considerations.
