Sixth spell of monsoon rains likely to lash country on August 5

As many as 162 people have been killed in different rain-related incidents in Punjab since the onset of the monsoon season as the Met Office has predicted that the sixth spell of rains is likely to kick off on August 5, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.

According to the report compiled by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, 571 people have been injured while 214 homes have been either damaged or destroyed and 121 cattle have perished so far.  

On the other hand, rains were recorded in Rawalpindi, Bahawalnagar, Murree, Chakwal, Sahiwal, Narowal, Attock, Okara and Lahore during the last 24 hours, while more rains were forecast for a majority of districts of the province during the next 24 hours.

In view of the sixth spell of rains likely to lash the province on August 5, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has directed the concerned administrations to remain on their toes.

The DG has said that the River Chenab is in low flood at Khanki, while the River Indus is in low flood at Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa. “However, the flow of water at Tarbela is normal,” he has said, adding that the water flow in Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers is normal.

Kathia has informed that the water level at Tarbela Dam is 89 per cent, while 61 per cent at Mangla Dam.

He has advised people to take precautionary measures in view of the monsoon rains. “Especially, look after your children. Do not let them bathe in low-lying areas, canals and rivers.
