FBR clarifies social media reports about scrutiny of exporters’ income tax returns

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued a clarification regarding the scrutiny of exporters’ income tax returns, rejecting claims circulating on social media that the process is aimed at imposing unfair taxes.

According to the FBR, a false impression is being created online suggesting that exporters’ returns are being scrutinized to burden them with unjust taxation. The authority clarified that the legal framework related to exporters was amended through the Finance Act, 2024.

As a result of these amendments, the tax regime applicable to exporters has been changed from the final tax regime to the minimum tax regime. The FBR stated that this change must be properly reflected in the income tax returns for the tax year 2025.

The FBR further said that its field formations have been directed to process exporters’ returns strictly in accordance with the law. It added that conducting desk audits of returns and ensuring compliance with tax laws is a legal responsibility of the FBR.

The process has been initiated under the supervision of FBR Headquarters to protect taxpayers from undue hardship. The FBR reiterated its commitment to establishing a fair tax system and ensuring the transparent and professional application of tax laws.
