Your wife is not your mother, says Nadia Jamil
Veteran actress sees women's empowerment through self-care, respect, and equal opportunity
Veteran actress Nadia Jamil has called for concerted efforts to empower women through self-care, mutual respect, and equal opportunities, saying such steps are essential for building stronger families as well as a more just society.
Speaking at a women-focused panel discussion, the acclaimed star stressed the need to prioritize women’s physical and emotional well-being amid changing societal expectations.
“A woman can build both careers and homes,” she said, challenging the long-held notion that women must choose between personal ambition and family life.
“Self-care isn’t selfish… it’s necessary. A woman who is emotionally and physically stable becomes a better mother, a better partner, and a stronger individual.”
Nadia Jamil spoke in detail about how the definition of a ‘perfect mother’ has evolved, shedding light on the burden women face in meeting unrealistic standards while often sidelining their own needs and identities.
“Love may demand sacrifice, but not self-erasure,” she said.
“Your wife is not your mother,” she added, pointing to the emotional labour and caregiving expectations often placed unfairly on women.
Her words struck a chord, particularly with younger women navigating the pressures of modern life while striving for balance and autonomy.
Calling for a cultural shift, Nadia urged society to support women in both their professional and domestic roles and to recognise the essential link between individual well-being and healthy, functional families.
She encouraged women to prioritise themselves alongside their children, reminding all that ‘nurturing oneself is the first step toward nurturing others’.
