Govt proposes Rs22 billion health development budget, prioritizes major projects

The federal government has proposed a development budget of Rs22 billion for the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Division under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2026-27.

According to official documents, 33 development schemes have been included in the proposed budget. Of the total allocation, Rs19.36 billion has been earmarked for 22 ongoing projects, while Rs2.64 billion has been proposed for 11 new development schemes.

Priority projects include the establishment of a cancer hospital in Islamabad, the Jinnah Medical Complex and Research Center, the National Programme for the Eradication of Hepatitis C and initiatives aimed at diabetes prevention.

The government has also proposed allocating Rs2 billion for the Prime Minister’s National Health Programme to further expand healthcare facilities for the public.

Among the new development schemes are the Federal Medical College Islamabad, the National Research and Fertility Care Center Karachi and the National University of Nursing Karachi. These projects are aimed at strengthening medical education, research, and specialized healthcare services.

According to official sources, the proposed development budget will focus on the timely completion of ongoing projects, provision of modern medical facilities, and improvement in the quality of research and teaching.

Experts believe that the successful completion of these projects within the stipulated timeframe could play a significant role in further strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system.
