Cabinet to discuss new design of currency notes tomorrow

Key decisions regarding the possible issuance of new design currency notes and the future of the Rs10 banknote are expected at the federal cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow (March 3), sources said on Monday.

According to insiders, recommendations concerning the introduction of newly designed currency notes have been included in the cabinet agenda. The federal cabinet had earlier assigned the task to a committee headed by the finance minister to review the matter and submit proposals.

Sources revealed that the committee has proposed the introduction of new design banknotes in denominations of Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5,000. The recommendations are likely to be discussed and considered for approval during the meeting.

In addition, the cabinet had sought recommendations regarding the future of the Rs10 banknote. The committee was directed to examine the possibility of abolishing the Rs10 note and to consider introducing a Rs10 coin instead. A proposal for the introduction of a Rs10 coin has also been prepared.

The cabinet meeting will deliberate on a seven-point agenda, which also includes the presentation of a summary related to the Hajj Policy 2027–30. Decisions taken by various cabinet committees are expected to be presented for formal approval.

Sources said the meeting could result in significant policy decisions affecting the country’s currency structure and other key administrative matters.
