Smog crisis worsens in Gujranwala and Lahore; Karachi faces record AQI

Gujranwala has been ranked the most polluted city in Pakistan, followed by Lahore in second place and Karachi in fourth, according to the latest air quality readings reported by 24News HD on Sunday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Gujranwala soared to 379, causing severe smog that has made breathing difficult for residents.

In particular, the industrial areas of Khyali, Sheikhupura Road, and Wapda Town are experiencing dangerously high pollution levels.

Lahore recorded an AQI of 339, while Karachi registered 206, making it the fourth most polluted city globally.

Medical experts have warned citizens to wear protective masks, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, and take precautions against respiratory, eye, and throat problems caused by the smog. 

Pulmonologists emphasized that prolonged exposure to high pollution levels can lead to severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, increase the risk of cancer, and even contribute to premature deaths. 

They further noted that both indoor and outdoor pollution negatively affect lung development, cognitive function, and overall life expectancy.

Authorities continue a province-wide crackdown on industries and individuals contributing to pollution. So far, 22 cases have been registered and several arrests made. 

Environmental specialists noted that particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in Gujranwala and Lahore are many times higher than global safety standards, posing serious health risks.

Experts also highlighted that low morning temperatures are trapping polluted particles close to the ground, worsening smog conditions. 

To combat the crisis, authorities plan to deploy anti-smog guns in the most affected areas in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Islamabad is expected to experience dry and cold weather, with a minimum temperature of 22°C and a maximum of 28°C, and no rain forecasted over the next 24 hours.
