PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry challenges disqualification in Lahore High Court

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) central leader and former senator Ejaz Chaudhry has challenged his disqualification notification before the Lahore High Court, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday. 

In his petition, Chaudhry made the Chairman of the Senate, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and other relevant authorities respondents. He questioned both the legality of the decision and the subsequent announcement of Senate bypolls. 

The petition stated that Chaudhry was handed a sentence in a case registered under anti-terrorism laws, following which the ECP issued a notification disqualifying him from the Senate.

However, he argued that his removal from the upper house was unlawful as it was carried out without granting him the right to appeal against the verdict.

Chaudhry further maintained that without a reference from the Chairman Senate, the ECP had no authority to issue a disqualification notification.

The PTI leader also raised objections to the ECP’s decision to announce the schedule for a by-election in his Senate seat, terming it a violation of legal and constitutional procedures.

The petition requested the court to declare the ECP’s disqualification notification null and void, and to set aside the schedule of the upcoming Senate by-election.
