Anti-Muslim violence escalates in Nepal amid rising communal tensions

Attacks on Muslims by the members of the Hindu community have escalated in southern Nepal, prompting authorities to impose a curfew and tighten security in the affected areas, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to reports, a group of Hindu extremists attacked members of the Muslim community, damaging a mosque by removing and throwing down a loudspeaker from its minaret before hoisting the flag of their organisation at the site.

The violence also reportedly saw several huts belonging to Muslim families set ablaze, while distressing scenes emerged of women crying and pleading for help as the unrest spread.

Reports said the violence began last week during an annual Hindu religious procession in Sunsari district, which borders India.

The incident reportedly triggered clashes that later spread to nearby localities.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, authorities have imposed a curfew in the affected areas and placed security forces on high alert, with patrols intensified at sensitive locations to prevent further violence.

Nepalese authorities appealed to members of both communities to exercise restraint, avoid actions that could inflame tensions, and cooperate with efforts to restore law and order.
