In yet another letter to Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman, speaker of the dissolved Punjab Assembly Sibtain Khan has urged him to announce the date for elections in the province, saying by not doing so he is violating the constitution, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.
Sibtain writes that as per the constitution of Pakistan, announcing the election date was necessary after the dissolution of an assembly. “However, you Mr. governor has not done that as yet,” he said.
The ex-speaker has said that article- 105 of the constitution says it quite explicitly that it is the governor who has to give the date for elections in the event of dissolution of a provincial assembly.
Similarly, Sibtain goes on to say, another article-224 (2) also says this quite clearly that elections for a provincial assembly should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of that assembly. “You, therefore, announce the election date so that a constitutional crisis in Punjab could be avoided,” he concluded.
