Punjab finalises new drama act with stricter controls on theatres and performers

The Punjab government has finalised a new Drama Act aimed at regulating stage performances and improving oversight of theatre productions across the province, reported 24NewsHD TV Thursday.

The revised legislation includes over ten amendments and is expected to be tabled in the provincial assembly next week.

Under the new law, every theatre will be required to appoint a scriptwriter approved by the Script Council. The performance of each theatre will be evaluated on a quarterly basis, and those found in violation of the law three consecutive times may face closures ranging from one to three months.

In a bid to curb vulgarity and uphold moral standards, the act introduces tough penalties against actors and actresses involved in what has been termed "immoral performances." Offending performers could face bans ranging from one to five years.

Additionally, theatre producers and directors will now also be held legally accountable for violations, with provisions for formal legal action under the new act. The revised law also calls for enhanced monitoring mechanisms, with more government departments set to be involved in the supervision of stage activities.

The new Drama Act will come into force in July. The Punjab Department of Information and Culture has completed all preparatory work, and officials say the updated legislation reflects the government’s commitment to restoring quality, decency, and discipline in the performing arts.
