Pakistan begins talks with IMF on economic and climate policies

Officials from Pakistan’s Finance Ministry and Planning Ministry have commenced discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), focusing on economic measures and climate-related initiatives, sources confirmed on Monday.

During the meeting, the Pakistani delegation submitted a Green Initiative Report to the IMF, outlining key climate change projects spearheaded by the Ministry of Planning. The preparation of this report was directed by the Ministry of Finance in response to the IMF’s new set of requirements, which were revealed by sources within the Planning Commission.

The discussions also covered Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) spending and potential budgetary adjustments for the current fiscal year. Ministry officials provided an overview of Pakistan’s economic performance and expenditure strategies in an introductory briefing, sources added.

Formal negotiations between Pakistan’s economic team and the IMF delegation are set to begin tomorrow. According to the official schedule, the Ministry of Finance and other key ministries will engage in further talks with the IMF to discuss policy measures and financial reforms required under the ongoing economic stabilization program.

The outcome of these negotiations is expected to play a crucial role in securing further financial assistance from the IMF, as Pakistan continues efforts to stabilize its economy and address climate-related challenges.
