BNP rally explosion was suicide bombing: Balochistan top officials

The provincial government has confirmed that Tuesday’s explosion at a BNP rally in a stadium was carried out by a suicide bomber, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

At least 15 people were killed and 38 others injured in the attack, which occurred shortly after a political gathering ended, Balochistan Additional Home Secretary Hamza Shafqaat said while addressing a press conference alongside SSP Operations Muhammad Baloch and DIG Crimes Farhan Zahid in Quetta on Wednesday.

Shafqaat said the attacker, believed to be under 30, detonated around 8kg of explosives. The remains of the suicide bomber were recovered from the site, he added, noting that although the rally had been scheduled for 3pm, the blast occurred around 9pm, nearly 500 meters away from the main venue.

He stated that 120 police personnel were deployed to secure the BNP rally, and authorities had already alerted political parties regarding security threats ahead of 12 Rabiul Awwal. The senior official announced that the Balochistan government would provide Rs1.5 million in compensation to the bereaved families and Rs500,000 to each injured victim.

Shafqaat said Section 144 has been imposed across Balochistan to maintain law and order, and political gatherings and processions will no longer be allowed after Maghrib prayers due to security risks. He added that militant organisations were attempting to destabilise Pakistan following recent counter-terrorism operations.

Separately, he pointed out that flood threats persist in Sibi and Naseerabad districts, where machinery has already been dispatched as a precaution. He recalled that over 100 people had lost their lives in flash floods during August last year.
