Educational institutes closed in Gujrat district as record rainfall triggers urban flooding

All the public and private educational institutions across the Gujrat district have been closed until further notice due to the torrential rains in the city, 24NewsHD TV reported on Wednesday.

A notification was issued by the Deputy Commissioner confirming the decision to suspend classes for the safety of students.

According to district authorities, the city received a staggering 506 millimeters of rain within just 24 hours, creating a flood-like situation.

The unprecedented downpour led to water entering both government and private offices, with reports indicating several feet of standing water in numerous locations.

The flooding has disrupted daily life in the city, forcing markets and business centers to remain closed as shopkeepers struggled to cope with inundated premises.

Residents in many neighborhoods faced mobility challenges as rainwater submerged streets and low-lying areas.

Authorities said the suspension of academic activities was aimed at preventing risks to schoolchildren while emergency teams continued rescue and relief operations.

The heavy rainfall has not only affected educational and commercial activity but also raised concerns about infrastructure damage and potential health hazards due to stagnant water.

Officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation improves.
