NDMA issues alert for heavy flood in Chenab river; residents urged to evacuate risk areas

The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has issued a high alert warning of a severe flood situation in the Chenab River, following heavy rains in the upper catchment areas and water releases from upstream dams.

According to the NEOC, floodwater is currently flowing from Marala to Khanki. The flow at Marala Headworks has been recorded at 548,237 cusecs, with the water expected to reach Khanki at 8 pm tonight and Qadirabad by 3 am. At Qadirabad, the flow is predicted to peak at 550,000 cusecs.

The river is expected to reach Trimo Headworks at 7 am on September 8 with a flow of 330,000 cusecs, Panjnad on September 11 with 264,000 cusecs, and Guddu Barrage by September 13 with 217,000 cusecs.

Authorities have directed all local and district administrations to take immediate precautionary, safety, and relief measures. Low-lying and riverside settlements have been urged to remain on high alert and relocate to safer areas. Residents of Khanki, Qadirabad, Trimu, Panjnad, and Guddu have been specifically advised to take preventive steps.

The NDMA stated that, on the Prime Minister’s instructions, it is monitoring rescue and relief efforts round the clock. The NEOC is fully operational 24/7 and is coordinating closely with civil and military institutions.

Citizens living along rivers and waterways have been told to strictly follow evacuation orders, avoid unnecessary travel to flood-hit areas, and keep emergency kits ready with food, water, medicines, and important documents. They have also been instructed to cooperate with relief teams and adhere to official guidelines for returning to their homes after evacuation.
