NDMA issues rain and flood alert for Punjab, KP, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a rain alert for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir for the next 12 to 24 hours, warning of possible flooding, landslides, and urban inundation in several areas.

According to the NDMA, intermittent rain is expected across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Buner, Abbottabad and adjoining districts. Heavy rainfall is also forecast for the north-eastern parts of Punjab, including Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Jhelum and Narowal, raising the risk of flooding in both urban and rural areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, light to moderate showers are likely in Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum, Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot. The authority cautioned that landslides in hilly areas and flooding in rivers remain a serious threat. Strong winds and thunderstorms could also cause the falling of weak trees and power outages.

The NDMA urged the local population, farmers, and relevant institutions to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures. It advised people living near rivers and waterways to immediately shift to safer locations and fully cooperate with evacuation orders. The authority further directed residents to avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone areas, keep emergency kits ready, and safeguard important documents.

The NDMA added that, on the instructions of the Prime Minister, all relevant agencies are actively engaged in monitoring and coordinating rescue and relief operations. The National Emergency Operation Center is functioning round the clock in coordination with civil and military institutions to ensure timely assistance.
