Pelican signals installed to improve pedestrian safety in Islamabad

Authorities in the federal capital have introduced a new safety facility for pedestrians with the installation of pelican signals at several busy intersections across the city. 

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel report, the initiative is aimed at improving pedestrian safety and easing road crossings in high-traffic areas.

As part of the project, pelican signals have also been installed on Radio Pakistan Road within the Red Zone, an area that experiences significant vehicular movement throughout the day. 

The system allows pedestrians to press a button at the crossing point to request a safe crossing.

Once the request is activated, traffic signals for vehicles are temporarily halted, and the pedestrian signal turns green, enabling people to cross the road safely. 

Officials say the measure is designed to reduce accidents and encourage safer road-use behaviour among both motorists and pedestrians.

The introduction of pelican signals marks a step towards modernising traffic management in the capital and prioritising pedestrian safety in congested urban areas.
