11 die, 8 injured as 6-storey residential building collapses in Karachi

At least 11 people were killed and eight including three women were injured, with more victims trapped under the rubble, when a six-storey residential building collapsed in Lyari area of Karachi on Friday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

As soon as the information received, rescue teams rushed to the spot and started their operation.

However, how many people were still trapped under the debris was yet to be ascertained.

Rescuers and residents worked together to pull people from the debris after the incident at around 10:10 am PST (0510 GMT).

"We have so far retrieved eight dead bodies and eight injured people," a senior local police official, Arif Aziz, told AFP. Up to 100 people had been living in the building, he added.

CEO, Trauma Centre Dr. Sabir Memonsaid bodies of eight people were brought while one woman died during treatment, 

All medical facilities are being provided to all the injured, he added.

Saad Edhi, of the Edhi welfare foundation that is leading the rescue operation, told AFP there could be "at least eight to 10 more people still trapped", describing it as a "worn-out building".

A large number of people were aiding the Rescue teams at the site of the building collapsed in Lee Market area.

The rescue workers with the help of local residents have so far able to pull out eight injured from the debris.

The bodies and injured were rushed to Civil Hospital for treatmemt. An emergency was declared at the Benazir Trauma Centre.

Sindh Local Bodies Minister Saeed Ghani said a high-level inquiry committee has been set up to investigate the incident and submit a report in three days. He also ordered immediate suspenced of concerned officers of building department.

CM takes notice

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took the notice of the building collapse in Liyari and said this is a sad incident. 

Chief Minister directed the concerned authorities to submit a report of the incident and the rescue teams must take immediate steps to rescue the people trapped under the debris and provide them medical treatment.

The officials briefed Chief Minister about the rescue operation and informed him about the dead and injured persons.

Further, Sindh Chief Minister sought  immediate details of dilapidated buildings in the city from Sindh Building Control Authority.

Dangerous buildings should be identified immediately and practical steps should be taken to protect citizens, Sindh Chief Minister directed.

He warned that negligence will not be tolerated because protection of human lives is the top priority. 

Roof and building collapses are common across Pakistan, mainly because of poor safety standards and shoddy construction materials in the South Asian country of more than 240 million people.

But Karachi, home to more than 20 million, is especially notorious for poor construction, illegal extensions, ageing infrastructure, overcrowding, and lax enforcement of building regulations.
