Heavy tax, levy, margins fire up prices of petrol, diesel

The government, which is supposed to sell petrol for Rs178.77 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) at Rs198.85 is selling it at Rs297.53 per liter and Rs309.50 per liter, respectively, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.

According to the documents available with the 24News TV channel, the government is collecting Rs118.76 in levy, tax and margins on each liter of petrol, while it is collecting Rs110.65 in levy, tax and margins on each liter of HSD.

Petroleum levy of Rs70.36, climate support levy of Rs5 and customs duty of Rs19.33 per liter has been levied on each liter of petrol.

Similarly, oil marketing companies are charging a margin of Rs7.87 on each liter of petrol, while the margin charged by dealers on each liter of petrol stands at Rs8.64.
