Traffic wardens in Lahore equipped with body cameras to ensure transparency and accountability

In a major step toward enhancing transparency and accountability, the City Traffic Police Lahore has begun installing body cameras on traffic wardens' uniforms, starting with personnel deployed on Mall Road, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed, the initiative aims to ensure that no challans (traffic fines) are issued without video evidence. The move is intended to protect both the public and traffic wardens by maintaining a clear, verifiable record of interactions.

"The purpose of these body cameras is to have complete and real-time evidence during duty, especially while issuing challans," said Dr. Waheed.

He added that the video footage would also support legal action against individuals who interfere with government duties or behave unlawfully on the roads.

In addition to improving traffic law enforcement, the cameras will also be useful for monitoring protests, rallies, and other public events, helping authorities better understand and manage road-related challenges.

Dr. Waheed emphasised that the modern technology-equipped cameras will play a crucial role in identifying traffic staff’s location in real time, and may even contribute to positive behavioural changes among both the public and law enforcement personnel.
