Startling revelations made in SBP report on govt loan borrowing

An astounding increase has been recorded in loan borrowing by the federal government, as revealed by the figures released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday. 

The figures reveal that only in April 2025, the government borrowed Rs1005 billion and by that time had borrowed Rs8,848 in one year. 

By April, 2025, the government’s domestic and foreign loans had reached the record level of Rs74,936 billion.

Overall loans borrowed by the government by April, 2024 stood at Rs6688 billion.

In April 2025, local loan borrowing reached Rs52,523 billion, whereas in the same month last year, it stood at Rs44,486 billion. 

In April 2025, the government’s external loans reached Rs22,413 billion.

In just one month, in April, foreign loans jumped up by Rs243 billion.

In April, 2024, the external loans were recorded at Rs21,602 billion.
