Adjournment motion filed in Punjab Assembly over ‘severe shortcomings’ at Mayo Hospital Lahore

An adjournment motion has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly over alleged lack of basic facilities and administrative failures at Mayo Hospital Lahore, following a report highlighting gaps in patient care.

The motion was moved by opposition member Farrukh Javed Moon, citing findings reported in a private newspaper based on a submission by the Punjab Healthcare Commission to a court.

According to the report, thousands of patients were unable to receive treatment despite being issued token slips. On April 9, a total of 6,085 tokens were issued, but only 3,639 patients were recorded as having received check-ups. Similarly, on April 10, 4,094 tokens were issued, while the status of 1,772 patients remained marked as “in-process” in the system.

The report further stated that 64 percent of patients who were examined could not be provided with medicines, raising concerns about the availability of essential supplies.

It also highlighted infrastructure issues, noting that the hospital’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup during outages lasts only three to four minutes, which was described as insufficient for a major teaching hospital. In addition, the availability of only two computers in the surgical outpatient department has forced doctors to write prescriptions manually on thermal slips.

The findings have raised questions over the performance of the hospital administration. In his motion, Moon urged the assembly to declare the matter urgent and allow a formal debate in the House to address the reported shortcomings.
