West Indies edge New Zealand by seven runs in thrilling first T20I

A disciplined bowling display earned the West Indies a hard-fought seven-run victory over New Zealand in the opening T20 International at Eden Park on Wednesday, despite a valiant all-round performance from Black Caps captain Mitchell Santner.

Having arrived in New Zealand only two days earlier, the visitors overcame early struggles on a lively drop-in wicket that offered both seam and turn, managing to post 164 for 6 in their 20 overs.

Captain Shai Hope anchored the innings with a composed 38-ball 50, guiding the West Indies through a tricky start after early dismissals of Brandon King and Alick Athanaze left them 32 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.

 Hope accelerated midway through the innings, adding 34 runs in three overs before being bowled by Zak Foulkes immediately after reaching his half-century.

In reply, New Zealand appeared in trouble early on as West Indies bowlers maintained tight lines and used the conditions effectively.

The hosts found themselves behind the required rate until Santner launched a late counterattack, blasting a 28-ball 55 to reignite hopes of a comeback.

However, despite Santner’s heroics, the Caribbean bowlers held their nerve in the closing overs, executing yorkers and slower deliveries to perfection and sealing an unlikely victory on foreign soil.

The win gives the West Indies a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series, with the second encounter scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.

Rovman Powell provided much-needed power for the West Indies, clubbing two sixes as he brought up a 23-ball 33, but his side meandered towards what appeared an under-par score.

But then it was all West Indies. Tim Robinson opened the batting for New Zealand alongside Devon Conway, who returned to the XI after Tim Seifert broke a finger while batting in domestic cricket on Sunday.

Seamer Matthew Forde was superb for West Indies, taking 1-9 from three powerplay overs.

New Zealand struggled to find the boundary, and a double strike by Jayden Seales in the 13th over flipped the game in the visitors’ favour, removing Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell in the space of three balls.

A late flurry from Santner gave New Zealand some hope, but needing 20 runs from the final over, he fell just short.

The skipper ended unbeaten on 55 off 28 balls, which included ten boundaries, with two of them being sixes.

The two sides will play again at Eden Park on Thursday in the second game of the five-match series.
