Transgender person fatally shot in Peshawar for refusing extortion, friendship

A transgender person who was seriously injured and was admitted to a hospital for treatment breathed his last in Peshawar on Monday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

According to details, transgender person of Afghan origin was critically injured in a targeted shooting incident in the Faqirabad area of Peshawar on Sunday night, raising fresh concerns over the safety of vulnerable communities in the city.

Police said the transgender person was targeted for refusing to give extortion money and develop friendship with the accused.

The victim, who was later identified as Dilbar, was attacked near Iqbal Plaza shortly after returning from a musical event. He was reportedly standing outside the plaza when two armed assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene.

Law enforcement officials stated that the attack appears to be premeditated, adding that one of the accused, Farhan alias Adam, along with an unidentified accomplice, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting.

The injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors described his condition as critical.

Police have launched an investigation and are conducting raids to apprehend the suspects. The incident has once again highlighted the persistent threats faced by transgender individuals, particularly those belonging to marginalized and refugee backgrounds, in the region.
