Corruption in Gujranwala medical college project costs govt billions
According to an inquiry report submitted to Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, corruption of billions of rupees has been unearthed in the construction of a medical college in Gujranwala, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
It has been learnt that the completion of the project was unnecessarily delayed in order to receive kickbacks. Initially, it was scheduled to be completed in February 2016, but now the date of its completion has been extended to June 2022.
Furthermore, medical instruments, which were purchased well ahead of construction of the college was completed precisely for the same purpose, have now expired.
Documents of the 18-page inquiry report which 24NewsHD TV channel managed to obtain show how a project which was originally worth Rs3 billion skyrocketed to Rs7 billion.
The report states that Bio Medical Engineer Nasir was later fired while no action was taken against Deputy Director Project Sohail Anjum Butt despite the fact that his corruption was proved. The situation is such that even now he is serving as MS Cardiology at Wazirabad, the report discloses.
