Babar Azam vows disciplined, fearless approach as Pakistan Test captain

Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has expressed confidence in his team's preparations as he begins a new stint as Test captain, vowing to lead with greater maturity, better planning and a renewed mindset, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

In an exclusive interview on the second episode of Straight Drive with Salman Butt, Babar described captaining Pakistan as one of the greatest honours of his career.

He said his previous experience as captain, along with the lessons learned as a player, has helped him develop a clearer approach to leadership.

"Whenever you get the opportunity to captain Pakistan, it is always an honour," Babar said.

"I have learnt a lot from my previous experience. With time, a captain gains maturity and clarity. This time I will lead the team with better planning, a positive mindset and greater confidence."

The skipper said experience brings clarity and maturity to a captain, adding that he has carefully reviewed his past decisions and tried to learn from them.

He also highlighted the importance of supporting young players during difficult phases, saying international cricket is a game of pressure, and he regularly speaks with emerging cricketers to help ease their burden.

Babar said his leadership revolves around three key principles—discipline, fitness and performance—and made it clear that there would be no compromise on any of them.

He praised the National Cricket Academy's red-ball training camp, describing it as highly beneficial for the team.

According to Babar, training in challenging conditions helps players become mentally and physically stronger, while the camp also focuses on preparing the squad to handle match pressure and different game situations.

Looking ahead, Babar acknowledged that the upcoming tour of the West Indies will be challenging but said the team has prepared well.

He also noted that several Pakistani players have county cricket experience in England, which he believes will prove valuable for the squad.

Discussing his batting approach, Babar said he always adapts his game according to the team's requirements.

If the situation demands aggressive batting, he plays positively, while he is equally prepared to adopt a defensive approach when conditions require patience.

The Pakistan captain also said the team welcomes constructive criticism and tries to learn from useful feedback.

He advised young cricketers to believe in themselves, remain patient and continue working hard, stressing that success does not come within a week or a month but through consistency and a strong routine.
