Dr. Shabbir Chaudhry shares advice on managing severe stone pain

A kidney specialist has shared important information about managing severe kidney stone pain with clarification that drinking excessive water during an active pain episode may not always be beneficial.

Explaining the cause of the pain, Dr. Shabbir Chaudhry said that when a stone is present inside the kidney or becomes lodged in the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder, it can obstruct the normal flow of urine.

As urine continues to be produced, pressure builds up behind the blockage, causing the kidney to swell and resulting in severe pain. According to the specialist, increasing water intake during such an episode may lead to the production of more urine, which can further worsen discomfort.

He advised that patients experiencing severe kidney stone pain should avoid excessive water consumption during the acute phase of the pain in order to minimize additional pressure on the kidney.

Using a hand-drawn diagram of the kidneys, ureters and bladder, Dr. Chaudhry explained how urine buildup behind a blockage contributes to pain, helping viewers better understand the condition.
