Adam Sandler’s longtime manager Sandy Wernick dies following short illness

Veteran Hollywood talent manager Sandy Wernick, best known for guiding the career of comedy star Adam Sandler, has died at the age of 86 following a brief illness.

According to family representatives, Wernick passed away on Thursday in Rancho Mirage, California, surrounded by his loved ones.

A private funeral service is expected to be held in Palm Desert, while a larger memorial gathering will take place in Los Angeles at a later date to celebrate his long and influential career in the entertainment industry.

Wernick played a crucial role in shaping Sandler’s rise in Hollywood. The manager signed the comedian when he was just 22 years old years, before Sandler became a household name on Saturday Night Live.

Their professional partnership soon grew into a close personal bond that lasted decades.

Sandler even paid tribute to his longtime manager in the 2017 Netflix film Sandy Wexler, where he portrayed a fictional talent manager inspired by Wernick’s personality and career. Wernick also made a brief cameo appearance in the movie.

Beyond managing Sandler, Wernick had a far reaching impact across the entertainment industry.

During his tenure at Brillstein Entertainment Partners, he worked with several prominent comedians and industry figures, including Jeff Ross, Colin Quinn, Rob Schneider, and producer Lorne Michaels.

Wernick also contributed as an executive producer on several of Sandler’s popular films, including Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Bulletproof, and The Wedding Singer.

Born in the Bronx in 1939, Wernick graduated from New York University before serving in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.

Before becoming a talent manager in the 1970s, he also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, their children Michele and Barry, daughter-in-law Jillian, grandson Sammy, and other close family members.

His legacy remains deeply tied to the success of many comedians and television projects that helped shape modern American comedy.
