Rajpal Yadav granted interim bail, lawyer reveals unexpected twist behind cheque case

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court, while his legal team has revealed surprising details about the long running financial dispute that led to the case.

According to his lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, the controversy goes beyond a simple money matter and may have been triggered by an incident during the promotional event of Yadav’s film Ata Pata Laapata, where Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was present.

The case was filed by businessman Madhav Gopal Agarwal, who had reportedly provided a loan of Rs5 crore to support the production of the film.

According to the lawyer, the two parties initially signed a primary agreement followed by three additional agreements by August 2012.

As part of the arrangement, Yadav issued five cheques that were scheduled to be encashed starting in December 2012.

However, tensions reportedly surfaced during the film’s music launch in September 2012.

Agarwal allegedly wanted to share the stage at the event attended by Bachchan, but Yadav’s team did not allow it, which later escalated into a legal conflict.

Soon after the incident, a petition was reportedly filed seeking a stay on the release of the film.

Later that year, the first cheque worth Rs60.6 lakh was successfully cleared, following which the complainant agreed to withdraw the objection and a new consent agreement was signed in 2013, cancelling earlier arrangements.

In 2016, the court determined that a total of Rs10.40 crore was payable in the matter. Yadav’s side claims that around Rs1.90 crore was paid during the recovery process, while another individual offered property worth Rs15 crore as a guarantee for the remaining amount.

However, the complainant reportedly rejected the proposal and pursued legal action based on earlier agreements, leading to a conviction in 2018 and a fine exceeding Rs11.5 crore.

Yadav’s legal team has since challenged the verdict, arguing that the case should be reconsidered in detail to ensure a fair decision.
