Rawalpindi, Islamabad to celebrate Basant despite ban

Despite a ban on kite flying in Punjab, the Kite Flying Association of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Friday announced Basant festival in the twin cities.

The association says that Basant Night in cantonment areas, including Tench Bhatta, Peoples Colony, Dhok Syedan, Morgah, and Chuhur Harpal, will be celebrated on February 20 (Thursday), followed by Basant Day on February 21 (Friday).

In Rawalpindi city, Basant Night is scheduled for February 27 (Thursday), with Basant Day on February 28 (Friday).

Despite government restrictions, the Kite Flying Association has vowed to go ahead with the celebrations. The association argues that instead of banning Basant, authorities should impose stricter penalties on the use of metal and chemical-coated kite strings.

“Even if the punishment is 14 years in prison or life imprisonment, Basant will still be celebrated,” said Kite Flying Association Vice Chairman Chaudhry Iqbal. He added that Basant Night will take place from sunset until midnight, with only white kites permitted. The festival will also feature rooftop barbecues and traditional feasts, making it a lively celebration despite official restrictions.

The Punjab government has passed a new law that permanently bans kite flying across the province. Violators will have to face prison terms ranging from three to five years and a fine of up to Rs2 million.
