Indian gym owner praised for standing up to Hindu extremists harassing Muslim shopkeeper
A Hindu man who stood up to alleged extremists harassing an elderly Muslim shopkeeper in India’s Uttarakhand state has become a social media star, drawing widespread praise for his stance against religious intimidation.
According to Indian media reports, the incident occurred on Jan. 28 when members of the Hindu extremist group Bajrang Dal allegedly pressured a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper, Wakeel Ahmed, to change the name of his shop, Baba School Dress.
Reports said several extremists gathered outside the shop and began threatening and harassing the elderly trader. The situation escalated until a local gym owner and trainer, Deepak Kumar, arrived at the scene and openly supported the shopkeeper.

When confronted by the alleged Bajrang Dal activists and asked his name, Kumar reportedly responded, “My name is Mohammad Deepak,” and firmly defended the Muslim shopkeeper, forcing the group to back down.
Videos of the incident quickly circulated on social media, earning Kumar widespread admiration for standing up against communal harassment and promoting religious harmony.
The incident has sparked renewed debate in India over rising intolerance and the targeting of minorities, with many users hailing the act as a rare and courageous stand against extremism.
